Sacred stories and their many retellings

Enter narratives through their characters, source traditions, regional retellings, performance, and the questions they continue to raise.

Sacred stories are not detachable moral fables. They live in Sanskrit and regional texts, temple performance, song, drama, dance, household telling, festival cycles, visual art, and new retellings. A story may change in emphasis as it moves between communities.

These guides identify a source tradition where possible and clearly note when several versions circulate. They distinguish narrative summary from historical claim and avoid using “myth” as a dismissive synonym for falsehood. The aim is to help readers ask what a story does: how it presents devotion, responsibility, courage, grief, divine play, or moral ambiguity.

Follow each story toward the relevant deity profile, scripture, festival, symbol, and child-friendly lesson. The connections show why a narrative can be at once literary, devotional, regional, and philosophical.

A note on context

Story versions vary across texts, languages, performance traditions, regions, and communities. A short summary is an invitation to the source tradition, not a replacement for it.
